Insulation Cover Specification.
This specification defines generally accepted materials and methods of
manufacture for effective insulation covers. It does not represent every
material or combination of materials available.
Fabric used in the manufacture of insulation covers meets BS476: Part:
1971 giving Class 1 surface spread of flame rating. The plain glass fabrics
used for the inner face are woven to minimum weight 400 grams per square
metre and are suitable for temperatures up to 550°C. The filling is
usually mineral wool suitable for temperatures up to 650°C.
The outer face can be of many different types of fabric to suit the application,
e.g. plain fabric, coated fabric, treated fabric, different weights and
colours, etc. Sewing is usually with Kevlar or stainless steel thread
to suit application.
All insulation covers are secured with either:
a. Hooks and back plates (brass or zinc plated).
or
b. Velcro hook and loop strip.
Flaps and draw cords are also provided to secure to adjacent pipe insulation.
Special insulation covers can be manufactured for specific applications,
e.g. high moisture content, acid or other chemical contamination, or high
temperatures up to 1000°C.
In the present day situation of spiralling prices, high fuel costs and
an awareness of energy conservation, it is good policy to insulate every
component of a heating system. Even though access is required to control
equipment valves, flanges, etc. on a regular basis, this is still possible
using SPG insulation covers.
